Art For Baby is a brilliant concept that most babies will find fascinating, and it’s a book I like so much that it’s my go-to present for new parents. In its pages are works of art specifically created for babies by some of the world’s leading contemporary artists. All of them consist of simple, high-contrast black-and-white images that will appeal to babies from a few weeks of age onwards. The artists who have contributed images include Josef Albers, Patrick Caulfield, Keith Haring, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Kazimir Malevich, Paul Morrison, Takashi Murakami, Julian Opie, Bridget Riley, and David Shrigley. As a bonus, this book also contains the same images on a frieze that you can use to decorate your new baby’s nursery.

What Age Of Child Is It Aimed At? This book is aimed at children from just after birth until about three years old, although older children may still be fascinated by the images it contains.
How Long Will It Take To Read? This isn’t really a book you sit down and read with your child, but rather one that you will show to them, and it will take as long as their interest holds (which may be anything from a few minutes to a quarter of an hour or more).
What I Like About This Book? The reason I like this book is because I feel it is never too early to encourage your child to engage with the beauty in the world around them. The images in this book will both intrigue and stimulate your child, and will help them develop an interest in the external world. Exposing them to art from an early age won’t guarantee they’ll grow up to be art-lovers themselves (because that will be up to them!), but it will lay the early building blocks for developing a curious and engaging mind.
What Core Life Skills Will It Help Develop? This book will help with vision, visual processing and cognitive development, as well as providing mental stimulation. These are the basis for the future development of core life skills such as hand-eye coordination and self-control. In addition, exposing your child to art from as early an age as possible will help them develop an appreciation of the beauty of the world around them.
Are There Other Books In The Same Series? Yes. Since this book was first released, two further books have been published in the Art For Baby series. These are Art For Baby: Faces (Feb 2013 – click here to purchase in the UK and here to purchase in the US) and Art For Baby: Colour Box (Aug 2014 – click here to purchase in the UK and here to purchase in the US). As with the original 2008 version of Art For Baby (which it is no longer in print), a royalty from every one of these books sold in the UK goes to the NSPCC.
